Why do veterinarians sometimes instruct a dosage higher than the recommended dosage on the package?

2024-09-14

1. Animal individual differences:

• Due to different severity of illness. For example, in cases of severe heart failure or renal failure, a higher dose is needed to control the condition.

• Considering weight and body size factors, large animals may require a higher dose.

2. Characteristics of drug metabolism:

• When absorption and bioavailability are low, a higher dose is needed to ensure drug efficacy.

• If the metabolism rate is fast, a higher dose may be required to maintain an effective concentration.

3. Impact of combined medication:

• When combined with other drugs and there is an interaction that reduces its efficacy, the dose may be increased. However, veterinarians will carefully evaluate and closely monitor the animal's reaction.
